| Back to INDEX | Cheyenne Holy Trinity 1981-1990 1981 March 25-26-27 – First Diocesan Assembly held in Casper, Father Fahey, Leo Quinlivan & Martha Barton represented the Parish. April 15 – The Men’s Association purchased a 15 passenger van to be used by parish organizations. The van was blessed on Palm Sunday. June 14 – Trinity Sunday - Parish Hall was dedicated and renamed “Mother Cabrini”, first American to be canonized. She is also Father Fahey’s favorite Saint. July – St. Mary’s High School renamed “Seton”, after Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American Saint who was instrumental in establishing Catholic Schools. Traveling Madonna started by the Men’s Association. A Statute of the Blessed Virgin is taken to a home for a week; during that time the family prays the Rosary and other prayers together. After the week is up they take the Madonna to another family and so on. Men’s Association put out the first Parish Directory. Judy Arciniga was named the Young Mother of the year. Dr. James Haller approached the Parish Council wanting to purchase a portion of our property to build his clinic. The Council voted not to sell. Marion Year – A year to pray and pay special homage to the Mother of the Universal Church. Men’s Association started their annual Budwieser ClassicInvitational Catholic Handicap Golf Tournament. The proceeds go to St. Joseph’s Children’s Home in Torrington.
January 24th – Open House held - Tour guides were stationed in all areas of the church and the education center to inform the visitors of the purpose and meaning of the Confessional, stained glass windows, Stations of the Cross, Tabernacle, Sacred Vessels, Sacred Vestments, Sanctuary, Baptismal font and Sacramental. Visitors were served refreshments by the Holy Trinity CCW in Mother Cabrini Hall upon completion of the tour. Alma Thomas of the Parish Council was Chairman for this event. Year of Eucharistic Splendor. Purpose is to deepen and intensify our own personal belief in and devotion to the presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Plaque in vestibule was dedicated to the past presidents of the Men’s Association. It reads: “In Appreciation to the Men Who Have Provided the Leadership”. The Men’s Association sponsored a parish Organizational Fair in Mother Cabrini Hall and invited all church organizations from all three Parishes to participate. May 12 – 25th Anniversary of Holy Trinity - Festivities began with a con-celebrated Mass at 5:30 p.m. The principle celebrants were Bishop Hart, Father Delaney, the first pastor, and Thomas Fahey, the present pastor. Many other religious and laity from throughout the state attended. Following Mass a dinner was held at the Holiday Inn and featured the music of the Cheyenne Orchestral Ensemble. Pete Mulvaney was master of ceremonies. This was a project of the Parish Council with Ed & Helen Pivik as chairmen and Alma Thomas as fund raising chairman. A Maas Rowe Chronobell system was installed. It tolls out the hours and then plays several musical selections. Tapes of different music was also purchased. Donna Kassel of the Parish Council was instrumental in obtaining these bells. Sanctuary completely remodeled and the altar rails removed. Men’s Association started their first soft ball team. Three exhaust fans were installed in the basement by the Men’s Association. Sally Rojas was named Young Mother of the Year.
Msgr. William McCormick, Chancellor of the Diocese of Cheyenne, died on January 29, 1983. Msgr. Lawrence Etchingham became the next Chancellor in residence at Holy Trinity. This year has been designated a Holy Year with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on March 25th. The emphasis on this year is an awareness of Christ, and the importance of confession and penance. The Men’s Association planted 80 junipers on the church property. The completion of the sidewalks around the church property was completed.
Renewal Program throughout the Diocese started. John & Sally Lamons were coordinators from Holy Trinity. Richard Ames of the Parish Council implemented the graduating seniors breakfast. The graduates from the three high schools attend Mass in a group, they receive a gift from the Parish and breakfast is served to them and their family members. The Men’s Association prepares and serves the breakfast. Another Open House was held in June, with Alma Thomas from the Parish Council acting again as Chairman. Purchased a new organ to replace the one made by Father 0’Connor. As it was a kit, we were unable to obtain new parts for it. St. Jude’s Prayer Line was started by Fara Green, a member of the Parish Council. Scholarship fund was formed for the religious education children. Several scholarships are given to senior students from Holy Trinity who have distinguished themselves in the CYO and parish work. A special collection is taken up each year for this. HTCCW prepared and sold cook books containing favorite recipes from the members. November – Msgr. Lawrence Etchingham spoke to members of the Parish Council regarding a new rectory for Holy Trinity. The rectory will consist of living quarters for the priests and offices. Msgr. suggested that the Council appoint a building committee to assist in the program and a committee for the fund raising. If the Council voted to go ahead with the building, it would then be brought before the parishioners early in the spring after all the details are worked out.
The Investure of Msgr. Lawrence Etchingham took place on Sunday, May 12th. A reception followed in Mother Cabrini Hall. HTCCW did the first pictorial directory. August 1st – The Big Flood. HTCCW set up the Holy Trinity Flood Victims Relief Fund which was in operation for about 3 weeks to help anyone in need with cash, food, furnishing, clothes, etc.
Msgr. Etchingham became the Pastor at Pine Bluffs. In June Msgr. Frederick Kimmett came from retirement in Torrington to assist with Masses and take his residence at Holy Trinity. September 28th – Perpetual Adoration started at Holy Trinity. Many parishioners from throughout Cheyenne pledge a weekly Holy Hour, covering each of the 24 hours, seven days a week. We Catholics in Cheyenne, and especially at Holy Trinity, are blessed to have the first, and at present the only Chapel of Perpetual Adoration in Wyoming. Bishop Hart presided at the opening ceremonies of the Chapel beginning with Rosary and Benediction and then the procession to the Chapel. November 3rd – Bishop Hart & Msgr. Etchingham spoke to the members of the Parish Council regarding selling some of our land to HUD to build a 30 one bedroom units for senior citizens. They said our land is ideally located close to the hospital, shopping center & churches. They will give us approximately $85,0000.00 for our property. A corporation, separate from the Church, will be formed to manage the investment and after 40 years the property will be returned to Holy Trinity.
June 4th - Trinity Sunday - Father Fahey’s 40th Anniversary to the Priesthood. A special Mass was celebrated at 11:00. A reception and luncheon was held at the American Legion Post. The program consisted of Irish music and Irish dances and “This is Your Life” skit. David Zeienka was master of ceremonies. The members of the Parish Council were in charge of the arrangements. Peg Bathrick, a member of HTCCW, implemented the annual mini retreat to St. Thomas Seminary in Denver. Kevin Beaton from Holy Trinity, was ordained in the Easter Rite in Ohio. After his Mass of Thanksgiving at Holy Trinity a reception was held for him. A reception was held for Msgr. Kimmett’s 54th Anniversary to the Priesthood. A reception was held for Father James Doudican’s 40th Anniversary to the Priesthood. Many of his friends and former parishioners from around the State came to extend their best wishes. The Centennial Mass for the Diocese of Cheyenne was held on August 8th in Casper. Msgr. Kimmett purchased new drapes for the Adoration Chapel. Peg Bathrick from HTCCW, started the Wyoming Shepherds of the Flock. Each participant adopts one of the Wyoming priests as her special friend. She prays for him daily mentioning him by name in her prayers. She also remembers him with cards or in some special way on holidays and other special occasions, such as his birthday and the anniversary of his ordination.
Holy Trinity Manor opened on June 20th. It is maintained by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas. An open house was held and refreshments served. HTCCW held their First Halloween party for the children of the Parish. It was so successful that it continues to be an annual event. December – The new Parish Rectory was ready for occupancy. Tours of the rectory were given. The old rectory was sold to the Sisters at DePaul Hospital.
January – Msgr. Kimmett again retired and moved to the Mullen Home in Denver run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. June – Father Fahey retired and moved to Arizona. A reception in his honor was held in Mother Cabrini Hall. Members of HTCCW were in charge of the reception. Many people from throughout the city came to bid Father and master gardener a happy retirement. July 9th – Father Thomas Sheridan from St. Patrick’s Church in Casper became the new Pastor. A welcome reception was held for him following each of the Masses. Sister Rose Zita & Sister Josephine, Victory Noll Sisters who were in charge of the Religious Education Program at Holy Trinity, moved to their Mother House in Huntington, Indiana. A reception was held for them. The kitchen and parish hall rented out to the Senior Citizens for the serving of noon time meals on week days. (Not sure if it was ‘90 or ‘91 when Msgr. Etchingham & Msgr. Delaney retired and moved in at the Rectory - if it was 90 they can be included) OTHER ACTIVITIES DURING THIS PERIOD Men’s Association held their Silent Festival & Dance. Raffle-like tickets were sold and money prizes were given - the largest amount being $1,000. This was discontinued after 1982. The Men’s Association put on a St. Patrick’s dinner/dance each year. The traditional corned beef & cabbage is served. HTCCW hold their Ladies Brunch each February - door prizes & entertainment. The CYO put on pancake breakfasts several times a year. This has been discontinued. The Evangelization Committee of the Parish Council purchased and placed Bibles in the rooms at DePaul Hospital. They also had leaflets printed and placed in all the motels during the summer months containing the times of Masses at all three Cheyenne parishes. Baptismal gowns for babies and baptismal stoles for adults were made. HTCCW prepares sack lunches for the Special Olympics when they are held in Cheyenne. Welcome Coffee following the Sunday Masses were started by HTCCW IN 1980. Confessionals remodeled to accommodate the new rites of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. HTCCW continues the preparation & serving of funeral dinners -receptions - Christmas Party - garage sales. The Parish Council printed up a tri-fold pocket size calendar with
prayers on it and addresses & Mass times for all three parishes
in Cheyenne and the Base Chapel. Julie Alles was instrumental in this
